AI or a human accountability coach?

A human coach is better at judgement and at the harder conversations. An AI coach is better at turning up daily, reading your actual calendar, and remembering what you promised in March. If you can afford a good human coach and you need someone to think with, hire one. If your problem is the twenty-nine days a month when nobody is checking, that is the gap this fills.

We build one of these two things, so you can guess which way we are inclined. The table below is our honest read anyway, including the parts where we come off worse.

What a human coach does better

A good coach notices what you are avoiding saying, not just what you are avoiding doing. They can tell the difference between a week where you were lazy and a week where something went wrong at home, and they adjust. They can also decide that the goal you set in January was the wrong goal, which is a judgement call no email is going to make well.

There is also the plain social pressure of a booked session. Having to sit in front of someone and account for your fortnight is a different kind of motivation from receiving an email you could archive.

What an AI coach does better

It shows up daily rather than fortnightly, which matters because most drift happens between sessions. It reads your calendar and your task list directly, so it starts from what you did rather than from your account of what you did. It costs a fraction as much, so you are not weighing every session against the price.

It also does not get tired of you. A coach who has heard the same excuse four times will often let the fifth one go. Software has no such instinct, which is either the feature or the problem depending on the day.

How to pick

Pick a human if you are unsure what you should be working on, if the obstacle is something you need to talk through, or if you have tried self-directed systems repeatedly and none of them stuck. Pick software if you already know the plan and the failure is in the daily execution. Use both if the budget allows, and let the coach handle direction while the email handles the gaps.

If what you are dealing with is anxiety, depression or burnout, a therapist is the right call and neither option on this page is a substitute.

Common questions

Is an AI accountability coach as good as a human one?

No, and not in the way the question implies. A human coach is better at judgement, at noticing what you are not saying, and at knowing when to stop pushing. An AI coach is better at turning up every single day, at reading your calendar, and at remembering what you said six weeks ago. They are good at different things.

Which is cheaper?

AI, by a wide margin. Human coaching is priced per session and usually runs to several hundred dollars a month even at fortnightly frequency. Angry Assistant is $19 a month.

Can I use both?

Yes, and it is a reasonable combination. A coach every fortnight handles direction and the harder conversations. A daily email handles the days in between, when nobody is watching and the session is a long way off.

When should I not use an AI coach?

When what you need is therapy, when you are in genuine crisis, or when the problem is something you need a person to help you think through rather than something you need chasing on. An AI coach chases. It does not assess.
